This now deserves a thread because it is coming soon and people may want to chat about it!

Personally, because I will be on holiday, I was wondering if on Wednesday 4th of April, when Ain't Misbehavin' isn't on (it's being moved to Thurs for BSF kickoff) people fancy meeting up, possibly going out, having a bit of a party/social?

I've just made an enquiry which could be very cool if it works out - I will be updating as soon as I know anything more.

Also I see that Cardiff have their dance the day after BSF ends on Tuesday 10th of April - I am maybe a little excited by the prospect of dancing 7 days on the trot....

You know what - as Wednesday next week will not be Ain't Misbehavin' (it's moving to Thurs for Bristol Swing Fest) maybe that'd be a good night to have such a party (or maybe after-party, am considering inviting as many dancers as possible out on Weds for a bit of a social somewhere) to kick BSF off?

My flat is also carpeted and rather small, but I'm up for sock-blues if anyone fancies it - otherwise if anyone else has some space.........?

 Both!

When I hear music that I want to dance to and it's mostly or completely appropriate to dance then I will dance. When I dance it will be informed by what I know about dancing, which is a little bit of Skanking, Blues, Lindy Hop, very basic Waltz, and bits and pieces of other things. Therefore my dancing is a mixture of all of these, some coming out more depending on if I'm solo or partnered and the feel of the music. Wednesday nights it's mostly Swing so I dance almost entirely Lindy Hop.

If the dancing conversation I'm having with my partner mixed with the music says "Swing Out" then I'm gonna swing out, whatever the music is.

Thursday sounds an interesting place to start, unfortunately there are various dance classes on Thursday evenings from 7pm onwards so I won't be able to attend.

There seem to be a few people interested in this, which is good, however I am not in a position to do any organisation myself, so if any yoga for dancers is going to happen anytime soon then someone else will have to take it forward.

 Hello Hello

Unfortunately i thought the room was free but it isn't. :-(

I normally teach a regular mixed ability hatha flow yoga class on Thursdays 6-8.30pm at Portico Play , North street, St Andrews (Behind hobgoblin pub on gloucester road). I have all my kit there (mats, blocks, straps etc..) so if people want to drop in on that then they are most welcome. It won't be focused on dancers specifically, but it will all help. Teaching at another venue means i have to move the kit around, which is a bit of a pain.

I will keep looking at other venues, but please come along to my thursday session if you are free and you want to try it out.

My number: 07540 049693 for info

Hi Nancy, sorry for the delay in reply, I haven't been able to post on the forum for a while, but I think that's resolved now.

Perhaps a one-off on the 28th Feb would be a good idea, if you and the studio space are still available. That would also give us enough time to advertise it, and give you some idea of numbers in advance. What's the capacity and general location of the space, and when on Tuesday evening would suit you?

Only if you want to share them, of course :)

I got a lovely reaction to my set last night, so I thought I'd put it up - it'd be nice to get a bit of a repository here for people to get ideas of what to acquire for their own collections:

(Psst, bear in mind it was a 60s-70s themed night!)

1. The Boilermaker Jazz Band - Hey, Good Lookin' (5:07)
2. Carsie Blanton - Baby Can Dance (2:56)
3. The Puppini Sisters - In the Mood (3:12)
4. Dean Martin - How D'ya Like Your Eggs In The Morning? (2:48)
5. Eileen Barton - If I Knew You Were Coming I'd Have Baked a Cake (2:39)
6. Gloria Jones - Tainted Love (2:10)
7. Fats Waller - I’m Gonna Salt Away Some Sugar (3:21)
8. Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington - Mack the Knife (4:58)
9. Booker T. & The M.G.s - Green Onions (2:50)

No problem as far as I'm concerned -

West Coast Swing comes from the Lindy stable and is danced to modern R&B. Straighten out your lindy shapes to be more slotted and you can dance your own pseudo WCS to just about anything with 4/4 or 2/2 rhythm - even if it doesn't swing.

You can dance blues to slow songs

Latin can be fun - we dance Balboa regularly to Bossa Novas played at Jazz events, which is great because nobody remembers what that looked like anyway!! There is method in this madness - Bossa Novas are often played at a comfortable tempo for Bal and have a mambo feel - quick quick slow quick quick slow which is exactly like bal's footwork.

Neo swing would be the 90s ska/swing from the likes of the Cherry Poppin Daddies and Squirrel Nut Zippers, I think. I don't know of any other but I'm sure there's more should you feel that way inclined :P

I really want to go to one of the Hot Club nights but keep failing for one reason or another - maybe next time :)

I happen to love dancing (a version of thats simular to but not quite) Lindy to electro swing music and some hip hop. Most electro swing is rubbish, but not the stuff that Joe plays at his "hot club of swing" nights at leftbank. I find it very inspirational, very fun, very cool but also very energetic and fast. I get lots of very nice comments, which is nice but not why I love dancing to it so much. Me and Tashi had some great well connected dances on friday which were possibly better than some of the best dances I've had to swing tracks. Also me and David both sort of danced together to an amazing track, which has been in my head ever since!
Other than those genres I'm not fussed on dancin Lindy to other non-swing music, but I do love dancin and when I force myself to dance to other non-swing music with a fun follow I find I do actually have alot of fun and find it very enjoyable.
What is Neo-swing btw?

If the interested boys have an honest interest in the girly stylings, then I'm not sure I can see why not (we did say open to all levels) - but we need to have the power to veto questions/suggestions in case the "how to be girly when you're a bloke" part gets in the way of the rest of us getting on ;)

Also, Steph's suggested we bring heels - tell you what, say they can come if they can a) find a pair of heels that fit them and b) can dance in them !

 Hi There

I haven't been linked into the forum threads yet. It was my housemate Rosa that told me you were having this discussion. Would LOVE to do some yoga for the dancers.

Tuesdays are generally best for me. could start 21st feb earliest.

I teach in a studio space which is also avaialble on tuesdays so, if this is of interest we can run it there.

Let me know numbers and will work out cost

Cheers

Nancy x
